Neatly tucked on the Pacific Ocean coast on the land bridge that connects North America and South America, El Salvador is the smallest of the Central American countries. El Salvador is only about 8,400 square miles in area, or approximately the size of the state of Massachusetts. With an excellent infrastructure of highways and car rental agencies, the interior of the country is easy to get around.
Along the northern stretches of El Salvador the Sierra Madre mountains rise over 9,000 feet above sea level. Throughout the country, there are 25 different volcanoes that are responsible for much of El Salvador’s geological monuments and nature’s beautiful handiwork.
Because of a well-educated rapidly growing democratic government inspired by American, Canadian, European, and Asian business investments, tourism is growing rapidly throughout El Salvador. You’ll find the capitol city of San Salvador a fast paced modern city with five-star hotels, exquisite restaurants, romantic cafes and an abundance of nightlife. There are many culinary delights that must be tasted while in El Salvador. The diverse cultures have shaped an evolution of foods that are unique and original to El Salvador. Sampling traditional foods of the region is a gastronomy delight. The most common and distinctive Salvadoran food is the pupusa. They are thick corn tortillas filled with soft, white cheese and are best hot off the skillet.
Colorful crafts and festive looking designs are some of the first things that will catch your eye when visiting El Salvador. Time spent browsing through the many local artisan markets for unusual items is a favorite pastime for visitors. Very few visitors ever leave without taking home a little piece of history and culture.
